Transformers Continues to Top Box Office:

Transformers: Age of Extinction kept hold of the number one spot at the box office over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The Michael Bay film made more than $37 million, beating the premiere of Tammy, a comedy starring Melissa McCarthy. 22 Jump Street continued its strong showing at third place, and Deliver Us From Evil, an exorcism film, opened in a weak fourth place.

The top twelve earned a combined $118.5 million this weekend, which is the lowest Independence Day Weekend since 1999, in which the box office was $116.5 million. Last year, the hits Despicable Me 2 and The Lone Ranger opened over the holiday weekend.

Age of Extinction dropped 63 percent from last week, but with no serious competition easily held first place. The action film has grossed a total of over $174 million. Critics’ reviews of the film have been poor, with a score of 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Previous films in the franchise have scored similarly. Audiences, however, gave the film an A- on CinemaScore.

Tammy grossed over $33 million on its opening weekend. The Warner Bros. film made $2.5 million in foreign sales, for a worldwide total of over $35.8 million. The film follows Tammy, a burger-joint worker, who has totaled her car and catches her husband getting comfortable with their neighbor in her own house. With her grandmother, Tammy ends up on a crazy roadtrip. The film has been poorly received from critics and audiences alike, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 23 percent from critics and 59 percent from audiences, as well as a C+ on CinemaScore.

Sony’s 22 Jump Street starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill garnered an additional $9.8 million for a total gross of over $159 million. The comedy sequel, like the original, has impressed both critics and fans with an 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us From Evil opened in fourth place with more than $9.7 million and a worldwide gross of over $15 million. The film, based on a book, depicts a New York police officer and a priest who join forces to combat demonic forces in the city. Audiences and critics have been disappointed. The film has a 33 percent Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, and a B- CinemaScore.

How to Train Your Dragon 2, now in its fourth week, closed the top five with a weekend gross of over $8.9 million, for a total of more than $140.2 million. Both critics and audiences have praised the film, giving it over 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The third film in the DreamWorks animated series is scheduled to be released June 2016.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens next weekend, and the action-packed sequel on genetically evolved apes will likely overturn Age of Extinction’s reign at the box office. The film stars Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, and Keri Russell. If you like this Transformers Continues to Top Box Office article share it and Like IT…. 😛
