Saying goodbye to Summer isn’t the easiest of things to do, especially if you’re an English guy like myself and that means the chance of having any sun at all become even slimmer. But it also means that it’s the perfect time to start looking towards the amazing films that will be showing at the cinemas.Lets Look at the best Movies coming out this fall of 2014.

Reese Witherspoon plays a straight-talking American Woman who is assigned help four young Sudanese refugees, taking them in and showing them their new home.

Miss Julie – Liv Ullmann

Released Toronto Film Festival September
Taking place over the course of a midsummer night of 1890 in Fermanagh, this drama starring Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell is based on the book of the same name by August Strindberg. Chastain’s character is a troubled daughter of an Anglo-Irish aristocrat and her attempts to seduce her father’s valet goes to some dark places. It will be premiered in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto Film Festival.

White Bird in a Blizzard – Gregg Araki

Having premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2014 in January, this thriller starring the gorgeous Shailene Woodley and Eva Green as mother and daughter who are best friends and share everything and anything. One day, the mother suddenly disappears triggering a chain of life changing events for Woodley’s character. It’s going to be good!

The Two Faces of January – Hossein Amini

Released 26 September (limited)
Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac star in the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s book of the same name. The thriller is about a con artist, his wife and a stranger that flee to Athens after one of them is linked to the death of a private detective.

The Maze Runner – Wes Ball

Released 19 September USA
A whole bunch of new faces star in Wes Ball’s adaptation of James Dashner’s series of the same name. Focused on Thomas, it follows his story as he wakes up in, trapped, in a massive maze with a group of boys, all of whom have had their memories erased. But it’s his past that will help him find a way to escape. Starring new face Dylan O’Brien.

Laggies – Lynn Shelton

Released 10 October UK
I can’t wait to see this film. It premiered at January’s Sundance Film Festival and was a huge hit with critics and the audience. Keira Knightley plays a woman stuck in permanent adolescence. When her boyfriend proposes to her, she panics and befriends a 16-year old girl (Chloe Moretz) and ‘escapes’ from life with her.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them – Ned Benson

This film has been making major waves this year, a 3-stage film that covers each perspective; his, hers and theirs. It’s one couples story as the try to get their lives back on track and the love they once shared after experiencing a tragic event together. ‘Them’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 and was met with great success for both its stars Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy. Chastain is also credited as producer on the film.

Gone Girl – David Fincher

Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike star in a drama, mystery that sees a man’s search for his wife go wrong and the media turn their attention on him, wondering if he is an innocent as he at first seems. It’s based on the 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn but the author has stated the film deviates from the book slightly. Time will tell.

Whiplash – Damien Chazelle

Another face to watch and this time it is Miles Teller who plays Andrew Neyman, a young musician who struggles to make it as a top jazz drummer. J. K. Simmons plays his ruthless band conductor, creating tense, fiery verbal exchanges. Not going to be a blockbuster but it sure is one not to miss.

Nightcrawler – Dan Gilroy

Dan Gilroy directs Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton and Rene Russo in a crime thriller that sees a driven young man that finds himself mixed up in the underground world of L.A. freelance crime journalism.

Birdman – Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu

A film that everyone is talking about this year is the incredible looking Birdman, filmed to look like it was done in one huge long take and stars Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. It follows the struggles of an ex-superhero actor who has hopes to open a show on Broadway. A battle of ego, family and career ensues with bizarre and wonderful results. Looks amazing.

St. Vincent – Theodore Melfi

Released 24 October USA
A very nice cast together in a very nice sounding film; we have Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd and Naomi Watts starring in a film that focuses on the plights of St. Vincent, a drunken, gambling war veteran who is roped into being a minder for single-mum Maggie. The duo don’t see eye to eye at first but it isn’t long before they both starting learning new life lessons of each other.
