With a steady stream of horror films ready to be released in 2014, there’s no need to wait until Halloween to get your scary movie fix. This year is already off to a solid scary movie start, with anticipated films such as Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones gracing the big screen. But the best is yet to come. From modern-day horror movies to eerie tales based on true stories, these movies are a dream (or nightmare) come true for horror lovers. Check out these seven must-watch 7 Horror Films Ready Scare You in 2014.
1. Deliver Us From Evil
Released July 2, Deliver Us From Evil has an all-star cast to match its thrilling plot line, with names such as Olivia Munn, Eric Bana, Joel McHale, and Édgar Ramírez appearing in the movie. This make-your-skin crawl movie is based on the book and true-life crime cases of New York policeman Ralph Sarchie (played by Bana.) Sarchie’s investigations into disturbing crimes eventually cause him to team up with a priest, played by Ramírez, who is able to perform exorcisms. After being pulled into a dark and chilling case, Mendoza (Ramírez) begins to open Sarchie’s eyes to the possibility that it may involve forces much darker than he ever imagined.
Munn, who plays Sarchie’s wife, Jen, said the real Sarchie let her watch a video of a real-life exorcism. The five minutes she watched caused her to lose weeks of sleep, she said in a Toronto Sun article.
“And the crazy parts in the movie are what you see in this footage. The way that Eric explained it to me is, he said, ‘This guy. He is in a straitjacket. And he’s got this otherworldly look in his eyes’ … And he’s sitting there and he’s shaking and out of nowhere his forehead splits open … And he starts to drool and then when the drool comes out of his mouth and it hits the straitjacket it turns into blood … And then I turned it off. I was like, ‘I’m done. I’m done.’ And after that, that opened me up to believing again,” Munn told the Toronto Sun.
2. The Purge: Anarchy
Welcome to a movie centered around the one night a year when all crime is legal. This sequel that follows the 2013 thriller, The Purge, is set to hit theaters July 18. A couple is driving home to their kids when their car runs out of gas, just as the crime-riddled night (otherwise known as The Purge) begins. Another man seeks vengeance against the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it.
The 2013 film featured a great concept: What would happen if anything was legal for 12 hours? But the film was poorly executed, and the interesting concept didn’t hold up to the movie’s poor acting and muddled plot. However, the sequel includes a solid cast, including Frank Grillo and Friday Night Lights’ Zach Gilford, and is expected to be a higher budgeted, more refined film, writes io9.
3. The Green Inferno
Hitting theaters September 5, movie-goers can expect to see a lot of cannibal action in The Green Inferno. Screen Rant writes that a group of college activists head from New York City to the Peruvian jungle determined to put an end to illegal clear-cutting. But when their plane crashes in the jungle, the group of well-intentioned college kids quickly learn the natives are hoping to make a meal out of them.
The movie stars Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Sky Ferreira, Magda Apanowicz, Aaron Burns, and Ignacia Allamand. Entertainment Weekly writes that the inspiration behind this thriller is the highly controversial 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust, which contained such severe violence that it’s still banned in several countries.
4. Cooties
Elijah Wood and Alison Pill star in this thriller, which hits the big screen October 10. When an elementary school is hit with a horrible virus, all of the school kids are turned into monstrous quasi-zombies, per io9. Now, the teachers who have sworn to keep their kids safe at all costs, must fight them all in order to get out of the school alive.
The twist to this movie is it also has touches of humor throughout, placed there by Saw creator Leigh Whannell and Glee creator Ian Brennan. An Indiewire review writes, “With mainstay comedy faces, Cootie could reach a larger audience than other similar cultish work. It’s the best play on the recent zombie craze, and while not as well-timed as Zombieland, it has the potential to match that movie’s success with a wide enough release.”
5. See No Evil 2
With no set release date yet (there has been talk about October), many are anticipating the film, which will revive the nightmare of the first film when Jacob Goodnight rises from the dead in the city morgue after his infamous killing spree at the Blackwell hotel. A group of medical students must fight to survive as the thought-to-be-dead psychopath tries to pick them off one by one.
The 2006 film, See No Evil (pictured above), focused on a bunch of delinquent youths forced to spend a weekend fixing up an old hotel. Frank Williams is a former police officer turned chaperone who quit the police force years ago. Unfortunately for everyone involved, a psychopath, Goodnight, played by WWE wrestler Kane, is also there. The group soon realizes they’re being stalked and must fight for their lives against the giant, who’s determined to take them all out, per Horror Palace.
6. Clown
No release date has been officially set for this movie, but one thing’s for sure: it’s going to be creepy. Really creepy. The horror film, directed by Jon Watts, was originally a fake trailer created by Jon Watts and Christopher D. Ford, which centered around a father who, after getting let down by an entertainer for his son’s birthday party, decides to dress up himself, according to Geek Exchange. The father finds a hidden clown costume in the house, but discovers he can’t remove it once it’s on, undergoing a transformation into a terrifying demonic creature.
The actual movie will focus on the demonic aspect of the costume, in addition to the (unfortunate) child-eating side effects that come along with it. You’ll almost feel sorry for the innocent man going through the horrific transformation.
“But I really felt these guys deserved a shot, and that people are truly freaked out by evil clowns. It’s new territory to make this a version of The Fly, where this guy can feel himself changing, blacking out only to find blood all over his clown suit. You’re sympathetic toward a monster until the monster actually takes over,” Eli Roth, the film’s director, said to Geek Exchange.
7. Tusk
Rounding out 2014’s must-watch horror films is Tusk, a film about a journalist and podcast co-host, Wallace Bryton, (played by Justin Long), who discovers the story of a lifetime in Mr. Howe (Michael Parks), a worldwide adventurer with great stories and a fascination with walruses, according to Liberty Voice. However, when Bryton goes missing, his podcast co-host Teddy Craft (Haley Joel Osment) and Bryton’s girlfriend (Génesis Rodríguez) go out to search for him.
Tusk, which is being referred to as a modern-day monster movie, was written by Kevin Smith, and is based on an idea he developed during one of his podcasts. While no definite film date has been set, it’s expected to be released this fall.
